In January 2020, the National Rifle Association filed for chapter 11 protection in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Texas - a location in which it had never existed. The same day, they issued a press release basically saying that they were financially strong and that their only reason for filing was to stop New York Attorney General Letitia James from proceeding with her lawsuit alleging numerous counts of fraud and breach of fiduciary duty. So, their reason for filing was because things were great, but they didn’t want to defend themselves in court.
